bisdak: pilipino film rave

A night of independent Bisayan Art House Cinema, live performances & underground Pin@y DJs at a secret DT Oakland location in partnership with Baranggay Oakland and The Film Caravan. This was a celebration of Bisayan culture & identity projected on multiple screens and spotlighting overlooked narratives in our diverse cultural tapestry, with funds from the event directly supporting independent Bisayan filmmakers from the Islands.

Episode No. 01 (PILOT) of a series by BISDAK (Born Bisaya), a Bay Area-based creative collective of local & international independent filmmakers, culture bearers, and community-based artists working to disrupt the mono-culturalization of Filipino identity & tradition by amplifying Bisayan representation & creativity thru advocacy, grassroots cross-cultural organizing, & immersive underground events.

thotsilog

Super fun brunch party series that I’d wanted to throw since pre-pandemic times, the name THOTSILOG being a portmanteau of silog, Filipino breakfast combo dishes with garlic fried rice and egg + ….a word that very much encapsulated the vibe. I brought up acclaimed Santa Cruz-based chef Alex Suniga of PARÉ for his very first Oakland pop-ups and got Hella Pinay’s OG resident DJs back together at the brand new Nectar Social Club in DT Oakland. We had specialty cocktails, some legendary bagoong wings, and open format bangers from R&B to freestyle, house and jersey club.

Salbahe

My first club event series in the Bay, SALBAHE was inspired by the iconic K Rizz song and centered WOC performers, DJs, artists and vendors. Intended to reclaim the term SALBAHE – which means naughty but also comes from the Spanish word for savage i.e. barbaric and uncivilized, and often used as a term of contempt – I wanted to create a safe space for women and femmes to get free, as well as bring together small WOC-owned businesses, tarot readers, nail artists, etc. I curated the outdoor space for 7th West’s grand opening, brought King Marie out for her first Bay Area gig at the Ruby Ibarra UNDSCVRD afterparty, and partnered with Boogie Events on their monthly SHINE party at 111 Minna.

Club Events

Entrepinays

Now known as Pinayista, I was on first year planning committee for the Entrepinays summit, a community of Filipina entrepreneurs & creatives building sisterhood in the hustle. I threw the official afterparty for its second annual iteration; we rented out two private rooms in a karaoke bar and I curated the larger one with an all Filipina DJ lineup in partnership with San Miguel.

UNDSCVRD

Designed and developed merchandise for UNDSCVRD SF, a curated monthly night market of emerging artists and merchants as part of a multi-prong non-profit strategy designed to jump-start economic activity and build a thriving new commercial corridor in the SOMA Pilipinas cultural district. For the 2018 season I executed merch strategy, designed and built the merch booth, and managed PD/production, e-commerce and social media. For the 2019 season, I curated and managed a Hella Pinay tent that was all WOC artists and retailers, as well as brought out one of my favorite East Coast DJs and threw the official Jocelyn Enriquez afterparty in partnership with San Miguel.
